High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Culburra Public School, High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is an integral part of daily learning. We inspire our students to think deeply, create innovatively, lead confidently, and develop continuously.

  • Our teachers recognise individual learning needs within the classroom and employ evidence-based teaching strategies to challenge and extend student capabilities. We offer a range of learning pathways, such as enrichment and extension programs, as well as acceleration opportunities.
  • Our classrooms foster supportive environments that cultivate a sense of belonging while encouraging students to take risks, be creative, and collaborate with peers.
  • We design tasks that emphasise student choice, real-world relevance, and promote critical and creative thinking skills.
  • To meet the diverse needs of all learners, including those who are high potential and gifted, our teachers actively engage in ongoing professional development.
Across our school

Every student is unique, so we offer a variety of flexible and diverse opportunities to support their individual growth.

Students build on their strengths through activities such as debating, competitions, critical thinking workshops, sporting opportunities, and STEM and coding pathways.

  • We celebrate talent through school events and showcases including the Art Show, School Concert, STEM investigations and Choir, all supported by student roles in our technology and media teams.
  • Leadership opportunities flourish through participation in the Student Representative Council (SRC), Year 6 leadership roles, Kindergarten Buddy program and Peer Support. Wellbeing is recognised through our Burra Awards system and House Points.
  • Every day encourages curiosity and a sense of belonging, with lunchtime activities such as Open Library, Chess Club, the Garden club and the Environment club.
  • Physical activity is valued too, with involvement in PSSA sports, Representative pathways, inter-school competitions and inclusive sport competitions.
Across NSW

Our students engage in a broad range of statewide programs designed to extend and enrich their potential.

  • They take part in activities such as the APSMO Maths Olympiad, Premier’s Spelling Bee, Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking, Premier’s Debating Challenge, Shoalhaven Music Choral Festival, Southern Stars, Tournament of the Minds and Shoalhaven Eisteddfod.
