Research at home

Library and home research

In all library and class research tasks, our students are encouraged to make use of a variety of information

sources, including non-fiction texts, reference books, online databases, and the internet.

Students are taught the skills needed to effectively locate resources, evaluate information, re-write material in their own words and then organise their final published work. The aim is always to create new knowledge, not to simply transfer or 'copy' information.

The practice of copying and pasting information from books and the internet is not acceptable and is not the path to achieving high grades.

In our teaching we provide students with the skills they need to find and use web sites that are suitable to their level of reading. If you would like advice on recommended websites and strategies you can use at home to help supervise your child's internet use, please don't hesitate to ask your child's classroom teacher or the librarian.

All students have a personal password for accessing the DET Portal on a home computer, and this allows them to access useful resources. This is accessible via the 'Portal' tab on this website.

Students can also access the 'Library Enquiry' facility from home, through the DET Portal, by clicking on the 'My Library' icon after logging in. This can be used to search remotely in our current library collection for available books and resources.
